Pre-purchase Education and Counseling
In following with the mission of the Connection “providing Rhode Islanders with the tools necessary to become successful homeowners”, knowledge is the most valuable tool we can provide. Our Homebuyer classes and housing counseling are the backbone of our operation. The Homeownership Connection operates as the hub of operations for our member service providers. As such the Connection offers standardized curriculum, which meets the standardized set by Neighborhood Reinvestment Corp., standardized counselor certification and centralized registration and data collection. Since 2000, the Homeownership Connection has served over 10,000 households; 6,000 completed a homebuyer education certificate and 2,100 went on to close on their first home.
Post-purchase Education and Counseling
The post-purchase program operates in the same manner as the pre-purchase program however classes and counseling are geared towards those who have already purchased a home. The Post-purchase program works along side the Don’t Borrow Trouble Campaign.
Don’t Borrow Trouble Website
“Don’t Borrow Trouble” is a consumer awareness campaign, initiated by Freddie Mac that educates and counsels the public to avoid predatory lending practices. The campaign in Rhode Island is a partnership between the Homeownership Connection, Rhode Island Housing, Rhode Island Legal Services, Fannie Mae and Consumer Credit Counseling services of Southern New England.
The Homeownership Connection operates the campaigns toll-free hotline. Callers are provided with counseling and referrals for legal services, debt management plans and public assistance counseling. In addition, the Homeownership Connection tracks calls and evaluates trends in geography, demography and socio-economic conditions.
